Abstract

Chronic pain is a nosological entity that affects millions of people around the world, being one of the biggest health problems we face. Brazil, due to its economic and health care characteristics, has a high prevalence of the disease, in addition to presenting deficits in treatment. Therefore, the recognition of this disease, as well as its classification and proper management in primary and secondary care, is of paramount importance. A narrative bibliographic review of the main specialist entities in the subject and the VHL, PubMed and Scielo databases was carried out. Based on review articles, chronic pain is considered a painful stimulus that extends beyond the period of injury and involves a nociceptive disorder and lasts for more than 03 months, so it is important to identify intensity, perception of quality, body and temporal distribution of pain in order to make the best therapeutic choices. In addition, in the treatment, it is important to define a therapeutic plan with well-established goals with the patient and the multidisciplinary team, making the patient understand the disease and its fluctuations, making management easier and allowing the sharing of decisions, which makes is crucial to treatment.
