Abstract

The present work presents a descriptive research about the use of the Cannabis sativa plant as an alternative in the treatment of epilepsy against the existing traditional pharmacological therapy. Popularly known as marijuana is the most used drug of abuse in the world, due to this a stigma was created about its use as a medicinal plant, but its effectiveness as well as its low adverse effects have already been proven by several studies, showing how its use can be effective. Despite this, its mechanisms of action have not yet been fully elucidated, requiring studies that can better define its pharmacological profile, thus generating a new line of possibilities in the pharmaceutical industry aimed at the treatment of many patients who do not respond well to existing options. . With the advancement in scientific research focused on these compounds present in the plant, the cannabinoids, which are responsible for its pharmacologically active effects, the possibility of providing disease control for a wider range of patients with epilepsy could significantly increase, in addition to the possibility of these compounds acting in the treatment of several other pathologies such as multiple sclerosis, among many others
