Abstract

The occurrence of adverse events related to the administration of drugs and/or supplements is frequent in horses, which increases in severity according to the complexity of the therapeutic regime. Every day, high-performance equines with a clinical picture of several simultaneous conditions use many drugs and/or supplements, which makes them more susceptible to potential interactions. Together with the almost weekly participation of these animals in equestrian events, numerous pathologies arise, making this group the biggest users of drugs and/or supplements. This high demand increases the number of people suffering from chronic non-communicable diseases, which require continuous interventions and in which drugs and supplements play an important role.  In fact, the risks of inappropriate use of chemical compounds are greater in this category of animal. These animals constantly suffer from poor quality pharmacological therapy, the presence of polypharmacy, the use of inappropriate chemical compounds and duplicate therapy, which contributes to a greater risk of adverse reactions and drug interactions. In this context, the veterinary surgeon must pay special attention to polypharmacy and the prescription of potentially inappropriate drugs and/or supplements, in order to achieve optimum welfare.
