Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to demonstrate the importance of knowledge of Libras by nurses, since communication is the gateway to any service, and the use of sign language facilitates communication through gestures, in a specific language, made through signs, generating acceptance, assistance, commitment, respect and responsibility for the act of saving lives. Methodology: During data analysis, it was observed that although deaf patients have their right guaranteed by law to consultations for health care, there is still a huge gap regarding the quality of care, as most nurses do not have knowledge of Language of Signs – Libras. Results: The study addresses the importance of humanized care for deaf patients, especially knowledge of Libras and deficient nursing care, since currently society talks a lot about social inclusion and the rights of all, however what we observed is that our Society is not prepared to include people with a disability, such as deafness. The lack of oral communication makes deaf people disintegrated from hearing society, and as a result they have difficulties in taking advantage of basic health services. Conclusion: Given the assumptions presented, it is clear that there is a lack of preparation among nurses, taking into account that the basic instrument for good assistance is communication and the deaf patient must have freedom of choice for the place where he wants to be treated for follow-up of health. Therefore, all nurses must be trained to care for these patients, demonstrating their commitment to promoting and improving the population's quality of life, observing each patient, taking into account their biological, social, cultural, economic and psychological conditions.
