Abstract

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is an upper gastrointestinal neoplasm. Among the risk factors, the ingestion of carcinogenic agents and aggressive physical agents such as hot drink and caustic soda can be highlighted. In this sense, the aggression generated in the mucosa by chronic exposure to high temperature can initiate a carcinogenic cascade. The aim of this study is to analyze the correlation between mate consumption and the development of esophageal carcinoma through the scientific knowledge available in the literature, in order to understand it. This is an integrative data review, conducted in November 2022. To this end, the theme and the formation of the guiding question were established:"what is the relationship between mate and esophageal cancer?" which guided the work and the search for articles with the same theme. For theoretical reference, the Web of Science, National Library of Medicine - National Institutes of Health (PUBMED), LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature) and medline (Online System for Search and Analysis of Medical Literature) were used as databases. Thus, there are two possible mechanisms by which mate may increase the risk of esophageal cancer: the plant extract may contain carcinogenic or promoting substances, although it is still a bias of incomplete proof, and the other possibility is that the thermal injury potentiates the action of other carcinogens ingested. Therefore, the drink has a dual effect, and can be harmful or beneficial depending on the mode of consumption. In this bias, it can be seen that there is a need for wide dissemination about the correct consumption of the drink, so that people ingest it at milder temperatures and in smaller quantities.
