Abstract

This study aimed to identify the approaches taken by primary care nurses to prevent hypertension in the elderly in the context of the Family Health Strategy (ESF). It consists of an integrative review. Data were collected in the SciELO and VHL databases, using the descriptors "Nursing care", "Family Health Strategy", "Systemic Arterial Hypertension", "Primary Prevention" and "Elderly". The inclusion criteria were articles published between 2014 and 2024 in Portuguese, available in full, and that addressed nursing care for hypertensive elderly people. Articles in other languages, not available in full, not released free of charge, that did not meet the objective of the study, and duplicates in the databases were excluded. 10 articles were selected for analysis. The results were organized into two main axes: 1) Characteristics of hypertension and 2) Nursing care in preventing hypertension. The articles analyzed highlighted that hypertension is a prevalent condition among the elderly, often asymptomatic, but which can lead to serious complications if not treated properly. Nurses play a fundamental role in preventing and controlling hypertension, carrying out educational activities, regular monitoring of blood pressure, and encouraging adherence to treatment. The role of nurses in the ESF is crucial for preventing hypertension in the elderly. Through educational actions, monitoring and appropriate interventions, these professionals contribute significantly to the quality of life of the elderly. The study reinforces the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork in primary care for the prevention and control of high blood pressure.
