Abstract

The article evaluated the capacity of veterinary medicine in Brazil to intervene and rescue domestic animals during floods, focusing on the largest flood ever recorded in the south of the country. The research examines the effectiveness of rescue teams, post-disaster care and the crucial role of veterinary medicine in animal survival. The analysis highlighted the importance of specialised training and integration between multidisciplinary teams to optimise rescue operations. Logistical challenges and the need for clear and efficient protocols for handling animals in situations of risk were discussed. The results revealed that, despite progress, there are still gaps to be filled in terms of infrastructure and education to improve veterinary work in natural disasters.
